This proposal aims at continuing the µSR investigation of the RECrSb3 magnetic materials. Specifically, beam time was sought to carry measurements on the YbCrSb3 compound and to extend measurements on the LaCrSb3 materials. The Committee was highly supportive of the original E1006 proposal since it was bringing in a new potential µSR user (Mar) and opening a research avenue on a new class of materials. However, so far the Committee has not seen very exciting results coming out of this investigation. More importantly, it is becoming unclear what is the key scientific question at stake. In regards to YbCrSb3, unlike the GdCrSb3 highly neutron-absorbing compound, it is not clear that µSR is uniquely positioned compared to neutron scattering to investigate the detailed nature of the ordered phase in this system. The Committee strongly encourages the proponents of E1006 to bring this project to a close within this next beam time allocation.

Summary *

As described in more detail in the original proposal (2003), the subsequent progress report (2004), and the related reviews by the EEC, E1006 has been allocated a total of 24 shifts to carry out studies on polycrystalline samples of two members of the series RECrSb3 (RE=Rare Earth), i.e. LaCrSb3 and GdCrSb3. We have now used up these shifts.

Recall that the material LaCrSb3 is the prototypical compound of the series and is perhaps the most studied. The absence of f electrons in La3+ implies that any magnetic ordering originates entirely from Cr d electrons, so it serves as a point of comparison for other RECrSb3 members which contain a second magnetic sublattice of the rare-earth moments. Studies other than µSR, such as neutron scattering, indicate that the compound displays “unusual magnetism”. In particular, ferromagnetic ordering[3,4] is observed at Tc ≈ 120 - 140 K and a spin-reorientation transition at Tsr ≈ 95K (for H < 250 G). By contrast, the GdCrSb3 material is much less studied. An earlier publication[2] initially suggested that GdCrSb3 exhibits simple antiferromagnetism with TN = 26 K. However, more recent work by Mar’s group[6] and Jackson and Fisk[5], appear to contradict this. Both these recent studies indicate a ferrimagnetic phase developing below about 0K. A rich magnetic phase diagram is also anticipated from preliminary measurements. Since Gd has a high neutron absorption cross-section, neutron diffraction experiments are not feasible.

Our µSR studies on the polycrystalline form of the above-mentioned two compounds have been (essentially) completed:

In the LaCrSb3 compound zero/longitudinal magnetic field measurements have been carried out as a function of temperature. Our studies, thus far, have led to one preliminary publication (in press) in the recent µSR 2005 conference. The conference paper, which describes some of the near-zero-field results in LaCrSb3, is attached with this progress report. A more substantial paper on this compound is being prepared for submission (to Phys. Rev. B, etc).

Our work in the GdCrSb3 has focussed primarily on temperature and longitudinal field scans. These data are still being analyzed. Briefly:

• Although a magnetic transition develops below  90 K under zero-field cooled conditions, no coherent precession signals are observed. This suggests a broad distribution of fields at the muon, which results in rapidly decohering precession, but may also be related to persistent dynamics in the ordered state conected with the low-dimensionality and/or to dynamic Gd moments.

• The magnetic transition temperature depends on the strength of the magnetic field.

• The fluctuation rates can be extracted from the field dependences.

We now request beam time to carry out measurements on another member of the RECrSb3 series. Very recently, A. Mar and his group have synthesized samples of YbCrSb3 containing the late rare-earth Yb[1]. Since Yb can be either divalent (4f14) or trivalent (4f13), there are important implications for both the crystal and magnetic structure.
