| As explained in the introduction to this proposal the study of Bose-Einstein Condensation (BEC) is highly and historically interesting. The experimenters have identified an interesting system to study which also appears to be highly suitable for the µSR technique. They can synthesize single crystals of the quasi-1D system Pb2V3O9 large enough for good signal/background studies in the TRIUMF dilution-refrigerator spectrometer, which can reach 5-6 T in applied field. As such, this is a timely and interesting proposal which should be supported. Publications resulting from the experiments are likely to be of wide interest. The case for high-field, low-temperature measurements on the Pb2V3O9 crystal was well made and the proposal was strongly supported. However, it was noted that the schematic transition levels discussed in the presentation were essentially isotropic, whilst Pb2V3O9 is itself triclinic: the Committee wondered how the level scheme might be affected by the crystal symmetry. | |||

Concept of Bose Einstein Condensation (BEC) has become a central theme in modern physics, thanks to recent developments in cold atoms, high-Tc superconductors, and magnon BEC. In spin systems having singlet ground state, application of external magnetic field would lower the energy level of the triplet state. When the energy gap is overcome by the applied field, the population of spin-wave excitations towards the triplet state would become sufficient to form BEC at low temperatures.
We propose to continue to apply the MuSR method to study magnon BEC in poly and single crystal specimens of Pb2V3O9. Magnon BEC of this system has been studied by Waki, Yoshimura, and collaborators from Kyoto Univ. by specific heat and magnetization measurements. The relatively low critical field of about 5 T at T=1.5 K would allow access to MuSR studies limited to 6T with cuurent dilution cryostat. Waki et al. obtined the results only in the limited temperature region above 1.5 K. The condensation temperature in the Field-Temperature phase diagram, which can be determined by MuSR below T = 1.5 K, would help better characterization of magnon condensation in this system.
Average static spin polarization expected near the magnon BEC is of the order of 0.01 - 0.001 Bohr magneton per V. Superb sensitivity of MuSR will be helpful in detection of the static spin freezing associated with BEC. For the x-y component of the moments, which cannot be measured by uniform magnetization, MuSR would provide unique results unreachable by other methods. We expect that the MuSR relaxation rate in high transverse field is proportional to the transverse spin component. Since this component represents the order parameter, we will be able to study the condensation process directly from the temperture dependence of the MuSR relaxation rate.
We have poly-crystal specimens provided by Waki and Yoshimura, as well as single crystals which have just been newly grown by the group of C. Wiebe at FSU. We propose to perform MuSR studies in high transverse field using Dilution Cryostat at M15. We would like to request 13 shifts at M15 to continue this project. If successful, the results will be interpreted in collaboration with Ian Affleck, who is a leading theorist on magnon BEC.

- We propose to study Bose Einstein Condensation (BEC) of spin waves in a quasi 1-dimensional dimer chain spin system Pb2V3O9 by applying the muon spin relaxation (MuSR) method. Superb sensitivity of MuSR to detect small static magnetic fields from magnetically ordered moments will allow us to determine the condensation temperature in the field-temperature phase diagram. We are also interested in studying quantum phase transitions (QPT) at T = 20 mK by varying an applied external field as a tuning parameter. These measurments are expected to elucidate the BEC and QPT in a prototypical low dimensional spin gap system in a way that is difficult to achieve by any other experimental methods.
