Report from the Commission C12 (Nuclear Physics)

to the

IUPAP Council and Commission Chairs Meeting

October 5 - 6, 2007, Rio de Janeiro

C12 had three significant activities during the past year:

  • The Annual General Meeting of C12 held in Tokyo (during INPC2007) with –among other topics – Decisions on C12 support for IUPAP sponsorship of international conferences;
  • Selection of the prize winners and the award ceremony for the IUPAP (C12) Young Scientist Award;
  • Participation of the C12 officers in the IUPAP Working Group WG..9 and its IUPAP Handbook on Nuclear Physics Accelerator Facilities (see the report from WG.9 also submitted to this meeting of IUPAP Council and Commission Chairs).
    The agenda of the C12 Annual General Meeting is available as Appendix 1.

C12 Annual General Meeting:

The Commission Meeting was held on June 5th in Tokyo during the INPC2007 International Nuclear Physics Conference, the major tri-annual nuclear physics conference covering the field as a whole. In addition to discussions of general interest, such as the consolidation and merger of related conference series traditionally sponsored by IUPAP into a single series, and reports on liaison activities with other commissions, a major part of the meeting was devoted to presentations on conferences asking for IUPAP sponsorship and subsequent in camera discussions about the C12 support for sponsorship. The C12 recommendations on conference sponsorship are attached as Appendix 2. In addition there was an extensive report and discussion by the Chair of the IUPAP Working group WG..9 on the nuclear physics handbook prepared by WG..9 and distributed at the INPC2007 meeting and other

IUPAP sponsored nuclear physics conferences (see also the report submitted by Anthony W. Thomas, Chair of WG..9) to the C & CC Meeting).

IUPAP Young Scientist Award in Nuclear Physics:

In its 2006 Annual Meeting C12 had established the Prize Committee, with 6 voting members (from 4 continents) and the non-voting C12 Chair as Prize Committee Chair. From an excellent list of submitted nominations the Committee, after intense discussions and exchanges, unanimously chose the three prize winners. (The C12 rules provide for up to three prizes every three years to be awarded at the INPC major nuclear physics conference). The prizes were awarded in a plenary prize session at the Tokyo INPC2007 meeting, in which the prize winners presented talks on their prize-winning work. The names of the prize winners, their institutional affiliation, and their citations are attached as Appendix 3.
