Overview of Technology Transfer at TRIUMF
TRIUMF’s Technology Transfer Division (TTD) is responsible for the commercial interactions in which the laboratory participates. While TRIUMF is primarily a facility for fundamental research into sub-atomic physics, our scientists frequently produce innovations that have practical applications outside of the laboratory. It is the job of the Transfer Technology Division (TTD) to evaluate these products and procedures for commercial viability, protect intellectual property, and successfully commercialize promising technologies.
The Technology Transfer Division’s mandate includes the pursuit of all financially and technically viable opportunities for commercializing technologies emanating from the research at TRIUMF. The commercialization policy adopted by TRIUMF recognizes two major goals:
- To transfer TRIUMF technology to Canadian Industry, and
- To generate income for the purpose of funding additional research and creating further business opportunities from TRIUMF technology.
The TTD’s mandate recognizes the preeminence of scientific research at the laboratory, and seeks to optimize the benefit to TRIUMF and the Canadian economy while minimizing the impact on scientific activities at the facility. In addition, the TTD works with industry suppliers from across Canada to meet TRIUMF’s own technology requirements. In turn, the TTD seeks to promote these industries among other prominent science and technology institutions abroad.
The TTD is supported by grants from the National Research Council (NRC) and the Natural Sciences and Engineering Research Council of Canada (NSERC).
