One of TRIUMF's research teams works on creating new radioactive isotopes that can be incorporated chemically in various pharmaceuticals. When injected into a patient, these materials accumulate in specific organs and then the radiation from the isotope provides a "picture" of that organ. This technique can be invaluable in the diagnosis of disease or malfunctions.

MDS NORDION, a private firm, uses TRIUMF technology in manufacturing many such radioisotopes, which are sold worldwide.
