The purpose of this page is help you get started in ATLAS. It will also help you resolve issues you may encounter when running jobs. Where appropriate, information here is meant to supplement the ATLAS web site and Workbook.

[edit] Getting Started

Registration
Most of the information you will need is already in the Workbook. There is not much you can do until you receive your CERN account (estimated time: 2 working days) so this should be done first.

Grid Certificate
In order to run your jobs on the grid, you will need to obtain a grid certificate. The steps to do this is detailed in the link, which you can do as soon as you get your CERN computer account.

Meeting Information
You may want to subscribe to Hypernews or mailing lists.

Setup your Computer
You will also need to setup a computer, unless it was already done as part of a cluster at your group. ATLAS jobs should be run on the grid where jobs will be automatically submitted to where the data is accessible on the storage elements; however there are times when you will need to debug your job or to test it before submitting it on the grid. Note that you will have access to the CERN cluster lxplus.cern.ch once registration is completed.

User Account Setup
These are software which you may want or need to install in your account (ie. not as super user).

Install Kits or Multi
(You only need to do this step if a kit is not available on your computer and if you are not using lxplus.cern.ch.) ATLAS software is distributed in the form of Pacman Kits. One can either install individual Kits or a Multi-kit. The later will save some space since there may be some over-laps of software. However with a Multi-kit, it may be tricky if you want to remove a release and trim the directory (Image:Wip.gifneed to investigate).

Running Workbook Examples
While the examples in the workbook should work; you may encounter problems and want to work with a newer release. In this case, the instructions in this section may be of use.
