What you should be doing if you are on shift.

  • At the beginning of your shift make an e-log entry called Start of Shift Summary which includes the following:
    • The names of the persons on shift
    • The current experiment number
    • The current run number
    • What beam species is being delivered
    • The beam intensity being delivered
    • What JORWAY cycling times are currently being used
    • Which detector sub-systems are being used
    • What trigger is being used
    • What the peak rates are in the Ge, SCEPTAR, PACES and DANTE arrays shown on the striptool
    • The plan for the next 8 hours - What you expect will happen on your shift
    • Any special instructions which have been issued (Example: fill PACES)
    • Any significant events which are expected to occur during this shift (Example: beam will stop for proton therapy)
  • Regularly (once every hour) monitor the data being collected
    • Check all channels are still triggering (Ge, BGO, SCEPTAR, PACES, DANTE, ULM, SCALERS)
    • Check no channels are suddenly triggering at a much higher rate than the others (Ge, BGO, SCEPTAR, PACES, DANTE)
    • Watch for gain drifts or poor resolution in each Ge, PACES, DANTE channel
  • Record everything in the e-log
    • Any interruptions to beam delivery
    • Any thresholds or voltages which are adjusted
    • Any changes made to the ODB, JORWAY settings or Triggering
    • Any major changes in rates for whatever reason
    • Any significant events which occur
    • Any information which will be useful during data analysis
  • At the end of your shift make an e-log entry called End of Shift Summary which summarizes what happened in the shift. It should include the following:
    • What the plan from the Start of Shift Summary was and whether it was completed successfully. If it wasnt, why not and what happened instead
    • Mention any special instructions which you followed
    • Any significant events/changes to the running which occurred during your shift (Were there lots of interruptions to beam delivery? Did any channels stop triggering/drift significantly? Did you change the JORWAY cycling?)
